From Glenn Gardiner, 2 February 1998:

It was much harder than the installation of OS 8.0, but OS 8.1 has settled into its new home on the hard drive of my Turbo601 powered IIci. The grief I experienced was caused by a bad CD disc and in no way was related to my system configuration, or Turbo601 card. I won't go into the problems I had because of the defective disc, but will try to convey my first impressions working with 8.1. One last point concerning the installation. I tried unsuccessfully to download the complete update and floppy disc images from Apple's ftp site. After multiple attempts I gave up on Apple's site. A download of the complete binhex update from Download.com ("http://www.download.com/") worked on the first try and maintained faster throughput than when I tried the download from Apple.

Once I downloaded a good copy of the update the installation was a breeze. Probably the easiest OS installation I have ever done. My Gestalt ID is set to 104 and my machine type is reported as PM475/605, by TechTool 1.1.5. By the way I have successfully used TechTool twice, since OS 8.1 was installed. Once to check the hardware and general settings and a second time to rebuild the desktop of my boot drive. However, it is incapable of analyzing OS 8.1.

While writing this I have Netscape Navigator 4.04, AOL Instant Message, Claris Emailer and AppleCD Audio Player all running. I have been actively using 8.1 for about three hours and haven't had, so much as a hiccup. Windows open quicker then with OS 8 and the best part is windows with many items display those items faster. Not as fast as I would like, but even the Turbo601 is a poor substitute for a 266 G3. I haven't checked the time it takes to boot, but am hopeful it will have improved. My current boot time is 3:25. (185 extensions and control panels)

I have not encountered any conflicts thus far. I updated Conflict Catcher to 4.1.1 prior to the install and have SpeedDoubler 8 turned off. Thankfully, GoMac (what a blessing) and RamDoubler 2 both appear to be functioning normally. I have not launched Microsoft Office yet, because I don't want to spoil the euphoria.

It is almost 3am here in Pennsylvania and I've about worn out a months worth of my wife's patience. I will write and report how my major applications are behaving with OS 8.1.
