I just installed Mac OS 8 on my IIci and it works great! My only grip was I could not bootup from the CD because I was using a third party CD ROM. What I did is I copied the Disk Tools 2 of Mac OS 8. I then copied over the Apple CD ROM version 5.31 from the Mac 7.6. That particular version has bug. It reads 3rd party CD ROM. =0) I also copied over the 601 Processor Upgrade as well. The machine booted fine with my modified floppy and was able to run the installation on the CD ROM. I had to move the Monitor and Sound, Applevision, and SystemAV, and Display Enabler to the Disable Folder of Control Panel and Extension, and put back the invidiual Monitor and Sound icon back to control panel because I am running an old RasterOpps 24bit Video board. I am surprise that my video board is working! Other then that, the installation was very smooth and the machine is very stable. I suggest everyone upgrade to OS 8. It is really cool!

This is the Priliminary Report on MacOS 8 from me. It's so stable. You won't believe this, but I have had no crash ever since the installation. I have been surfing the web and doing the "net" stuff for nearly 3 hours now. Usually under 7.6.1, the computer will crash once or twice. Not this time.

The contextual menu is probably the biggest help to date. You can almost get away without having to use the menu bars, which now is similar to Windows' sticky menus, but much better of course.

The following is the report generated by Apple System Profiler 1.2.2. When you read it, you will find a great deal of 3rd party stuff. I wonder why it is still very smooth, not that I am complaining...

Graduated Rule

From Brent Thomson 12 August 1997

I have installed OS8 on my IIci/Turbo 601 (20Meg RAM) with very little trouble. I have been following the advice on your site and on others (I recommend the OS 8 Report on www.macnn.com). I could boot off the Disk Tools disk but would not recognize my 3rd party CD ROM. I reset Extension Manager to 7.6 base and restarted. I only installed the basic OS8. I chose to keep my OT 1.1.2 and PPP as is (I had installed the OT/PPP from OS8 on my PowerBook and now have trouble logging in to my ISP). After installation I replaced CD-ROM extension 5.4 with 5.3.1 in order for my CD-ROM drive to be recognized. I have been very happy with the machine's performance and have no crashes or freezes, even when using Netscape which is when I used to get most of my troubles. I also like the new interface.

From Bronson Trevor 23 July 1997:

I thought that you would be interested to know that the final release of OS 8 works great on my IIci/T601. Installation went off without a hitch, and it runs fine. I have two NuBus cards installed in the computer, a Farallon EtherMac 10baseT ethernet card and a Micro Conversions 2124NB II 24-bit graphics card. The graphics card and its associated software work fine, although I have no idea wether or not the ethernet card works, due to the fact that I have no access to an ethernet network at this time. I have no reason to suspect, however, that there should be any problem. I have yet to encounter any bugs or glitches (the system seems very stable), I will let you know as soon as I do.

From Glenn Gardiner 1 July 1997:

You have received the first email I have composed while running Mac OS 8 (final release). It is late here and I have to get to bed, but had to let you know first. To refresh your memory, I am running a IIci with Turbo 601 100MHz and 32MB of ram. Before the installation I ran the full suite of Mac Bench tests. I will let you know what has changed in a few days.

It installed with only minor difficulty and only a few conflicts. So, why do I feel so drained. It certainly was the most nerve racking installation I have ever done. I spent nearly two days preparing for this event and am I glad I did. It helped me make some critical decisions during the almost 2 hour installation.

First I couldn't get my system to boot from the CD-ROM, which is no surprise because it has never worked before. I followed the instructions in the readme files and the Installation Manual, which is 52 pages big, for installing with the OS 7.6.1 basic extension set. Once I got past that hurdle the installation script informs me that the basic install requires 95MB and I have 96 available, so it is ok to go ahead?? Being the fool I am I do just that.

The next order of business for the installation procedure is to check my hard drive and I am informed that there is a problem with my boot drive and installation cannot continue. Thank God there is an option for fools that says "Ignore Warning" and I jump right on it. As I stated earlier I had prepared well and was confident there was nothing wrong. Later in the installation I received a second option for which I could "Ignore Warning" and I did. Unfortunately, I did not write it down and don't remember what it was. I apologize. The installation then proceeded without incident, until it attempted to install Maclink Plus. I was then informed that I did not have sufficient space and provided me with an option to skip the installation for Maclink Plus. I did so gladly, as I already had it installed. On to Text-To-Speech and the end of the items I wanted to install and according to the installation script the end of what could be installed.

I was somewhat dismayed by the installation options, or rather the lack of options. I had no choice if I wanted Netscape on my boot drive, I already have it on my external. No choice about Claris Emailer Lite, I already have the full Emailer on my external. No choice about networking, had to disable everything ethernet later. And there were many others items I either could live without, or already have. Apparently, Apple has taken the stance that everyone is on a network, but no one is on the Web, or using email.

Not everything concerning the installation is negative. As I stated at the beginning it is up, running and since disabling a handful of extensions, rock solid. It is quick, sports some wonderful new features, which I am not going to beat to death because they have been published everywhere and works right out of the box. Gates can't even do that with something he steals. No problems with any of my SCSI devices (Zip, scanner, CD-Rom and external drive.) The fact that my 5 year old IIci, with almost 10,000 hours on it, can run the best damn OS on Earth is testament to the greatness of Apple.

Sorry, but I will have to get back to you in a couple of days. I have to be up in 4 hours.

23 July 1997

To bring you up to date on my experiences thus far:

My boot time has shrunk by 1.5 minutes, albeit with some of my old extensions disabled. I have not had a crash in four days, including using all applications installed since OS 7.6.1. I have not updated any applications thus far and all work flawlessly. I know for a fact that Microsoft Office is far more responsive, especially in my documents with large tables, ie 6 pages. Menus and windows literally fly open. Web pages are extracted from cache much quicker than with OS 7.6.1. However, my online time has been minimal, so my experience in this respect is somewhat limited. I changed the system font to Chisel 12, but would love to get my Verdana back. It was, so cool.

The only conflict I found to this point is GoMac, I want it back yesterday! All extensions and control panels that mess with menus, scroll bars and windows have been removed from the system folder. I plan to run the full suite of MacBench tests before I load any third part extensions, inits and control panels.
